CODEX / HISTORY
Where Codex history lives
Codex history for the OpenAI Codex CLI is stored on your Mac under ~/.codex as JSONL session files—not in a shared cloud inbox. AIChatMemory is independent of OpenAI; this page describes Codex’s local store and how to reopen threads.
Default folder on macOS
Codex CLI writes rollout and session transcripts under ~/.codex/. Files are grouped by session; each JSONL line records prompts, model replies, and tool activity for that run. Paths can vary slightly by Codex version, but the home-directory store is the source of truth for codex resume.
Browse history from the terminal
codex resume lists sessions for the current project directory. codex continue or codex resume --last opens the newest one. Inside a session, /resume switches threads without starting over.
Reading files directly
When you need a keyword grep across raw JSONL, you can search under ~/.codex with your shell tools. That stays on one machine unless you copy files yourself, and it does not rank meaning across months of unrelated repos.
What a separate archive adds
AIChatMemory uploads masked Codex, Claude Code, and Cursor chats from every Mac in your workspace. Connected agents call MCP tools search, count, and session to find past work by topic—not only by session id on one Mac. Masking is not a guarantee that no sensitive text remains.
